The flag is a symbol but it’s the people behind it who give it meaning.

On Flag Day, I’m thinking about what it means to show up for this country: to defend our freedoms, to push for justice, and to make sure the promise of America is real for everyone — not just a few.

That’s the kind of patriotism I believe in.

The first American flag was approved by the Continental Congress on this day in 1777. It’s been carried into battle, flown at marches, stitched by hand and raised in protest.

Our experiment with self-governance has not been perfect; it’s messy; but throughout our history, our flag has been a reminder of what we’re striving toward: a more perfect union, one where freedom and justice aren’t just ideals, but realities.

On Flag Day, I’m reflecting on what the flag has meant to generations before us and the work we still have to do to live up to its promise.

May you have a meaningful Flag Day.
